A Brief History of English Football

Association football, also known as just football, is a common team game played between two parallel teams of eleven players each. It’s played internationally by about 250 million players in more than 200 different countries and alliances, making it the most popular sport in the world. It’s also widely regarded as the most popular contact sport in the world; statistics prove this out with mentions in sports magazines, on ESPN, the BBC and other media worldwide.

The game of football is known all over the world, with the English football association being the governing body for football in England. The game was actually first introduced to the public during the 19th century but it was the First World War that kickstarted the popularity of the game. After the war ended, football became a regular fixture on British public television sets. Even the government began organizing matches for government employees to keep them fit. Football was also picked up as a sporting event by the royal family and has continued to be associated with the English country side ever since.

Today, English football is one of the most popular spectator sports in the country. A number of international tournaments such as the FA Cup and the League Cup are held annually and English football fans can be seen throughout the country cheering their team on. The FA Cup final is watched by millions of fans every year, and the League Cup, which features the English league’s top teams, frequently attracts the attention of the entire nation. A number of English football league teams have become very popular worldwide and this has led to the creation of different levels of competition within the league itself. The fourth tier, known as the Championship, consists of teams from England’s smaller towns and cities and is the lowest level of play in the English football league.
