Tennis is a racket game which is played between a pair of competitors each using a separate racket which is strung with string to strike an oblong ball called a tennis ball on top of a green court or over or on a net. The object of the game is to knock the ball over the line or across the court and return it to the players’ rack. The winner is the player who has managed to knock the ball over the line or across the court and then return it to their rack. For this, the player needs to have a proper stroke technique along with great agility and fitness.

A tennis match is normally played in singles or doubles format, where one player plays against another at the same time. While playing in a singles tournament, the player who finished first in the tournament is given the chance to face their opponent in the next stage. In doubles tournament, both players are paired and the player with the most number of doubles wins the game. However, in singles tournament, the player with the most doubles wins the game.

While playing a tennis match, it is important for the player to follow the rules and regulations set forth by the match authority. One such regulation is called the serve, in which the player must hit the ball over the net towards his opponent’s opponents racket for the purpose of serving the ball to that opponent. This is known as the overhand serve. The umpire is the person who decides when a player has served the ball over the net and when the ball is being hit by a forehand or backhand.
